Plan Your Cycling Stay
Check availability or get in touch if you’d like help with general ideas for your stay. For detailed route inspiration, many cyclists use Wheels Around Grantown, which offers an excellent collection of local road, gravel and mountain bike routes across the Cairngorms and Speyside. Whether you’re chasing climbs, gravel adventures or forest trails, Nethy Bridge makes a brilliant base for exploring the Cairngorms by bike.
Mountain & Gravel Riding
Nethy Bridge sits right on the edge of the Abernethy forest, giving immediate access to some of the best gravel and mountain biking in the Cairngorms.
One of the most popular routes is the Ryvoan Pass, a classic Highland crossing through ancient Caledonian pine forest, linking Nethy Bridge with Glenmore. It’s ideal for gravel bikes and mountain bikes, with stunning scenery and a real sense of journey. At the Glenmore end, many riders stop at the Alt Mór Café — a favourite coffee stop and a nice symmetry, as they serve the same coffee we do back at Nethy House.
For longer off-road rides, the Dava Way offers a traffic-free route along a former railway line, perfect for relaxed gravel riding or linking bigger loops through Moray and Speyside.
Mountain bikers are also well served locally. The trails in the Abernethy forest offer natural, flowing riding straight from the village, while the Agonach Woods trails in Grantown-on-Spey provide purpose-built single track for riders looking for something more technical. For families and playful sessions, the pump track at Boat of Garten is a popular stop and easily combined with a longer ride.
Road Cycling
& Big Climbs
For road cyclists, Nethy Bridge is exceptionally well placed. Quiet Highland roads radiate out in all directions, making it easy to build long, scenic loops straight from the village.
Two of the most celebrated climbs in the area start right on your doorstep:
• The Cairngorm climb — a long, steady ascent into the heart of the mountains, offering big elevation and classic Highland views.
• The Lecht — widely regarded as one of the toughest and most iconic road climbs in Britain, with sustained gradients and dramatic scenery.
Both climbs regularly feature on lists of the UK’s great cycling ascents, and riding them from your accommodation — without transfers — is a real draw for keen road riders.
Facilities at Nethy House
We aim to make life easy for cyclists:
• Secure bike storage in the basement
• Space for drying kit and helmets
• A work stand and basic tools for routine maintenance and adjustments
• Local route advice and ride suggestions
If you need help with bikes or equipment, we’re happy to point guests towards trusted local bike shops such as Mike’s Bikes / Aviemore Bikes for servicing, repairs, hire and advice. If you’re travelling without a bike or need a last-minute fix, just let us know and we’ll help you line things up.
Refuelling (Very Important!)
Good riding deserves good food. Our café is known for generous portions and home baking, making it an ideal place to refuel after a day on the bike. Regulars will tell you that our eccles cake is essentially bike power in cake form — best enjoyed with a strong coffee and tired legs.
Group & Multi-Day Cycling Breaks
With five guest rooms, Nethy House works well for small cycling groups who want to stay together while enjoying individual rooms. Our central location makes it easy to plan multi-day rides — tackling a different direction each day — while returning to the same comfortable base each evening.
