Walking and Trail Running Breaks

Nethy House is an ideal base for hillwalkers and trail runners looking to explore the Cairngorms on foot. Our café and rooms sit at the meeting point between river, forest, valley and mountain, making us the perfect rest-point, whatever journey you’re on. Whether you’re out for an hour’s run, a riverside walk, or a day in the hills, there are options in every direction, straight from the door.

As keen trail runners and hillwalkers ourselves, we're always happy to share resources or introduce you to local guides. Whatever your needs, we're happy to help out.

Plan Your Stay

Check availability or get in touch if you’d like help with general ideas for your stay. For detailed information and clear, accessible advice on routes for all abilities, head to the Walk Highlands website. The official Speyside Way and Cairngorms National Park sites are also great resources to help you with route planning. Below are just a few ideas to help you get started:

Forests, Riversides and From-the-Door Routes

One of the great pleasures of staying in Nethy Bridge is how easy it is to get moving. A network of paths and tracks runs directly from the village, making it simple to head out without driving.

The Abernethy Forest offers a number of waymarked paths through ancient Caledonian pine woods, ideal for relaxed walks and steady trail runs. Paths along the River Nethy link easily with wider forest routes, allowing you to tailor outings from short loops to longer half-day excursions.

The Speyside Way, one of Scotland’s most iconic trails, passes behind Nethy House and provides an excellent option for longer walks or steady, straightforward terrain for those looking to cover distance. Another popular local option is the Loch Garten loop, which takes you round the beautiful Loch Garten and more secretive Loch Mallachie. This works well for an easier day, recovery run, or mixed-ability group.

Longer, Iconic Trails

Routes towards Ryvoan and Glenmore combine forest track, open views and classic Cairngorm scenery, making them favourites with both walkers and trail runners.

For longer, more linear days, the Dava Way provides a gently graded route through wide Highland landscapes, well suited to long runs or relaxed point-to-point walks. Paths towards Carrbridge and the surrounding countryside offer further options for linking routes and exploring beyond the immediate forest.

These mid-level routes are particularly appealing in the shoulder seasons, when conditions higher up can be more demanding.

Mountain Access

For more experienced hillwalkers, the Cairngorms offer some of the finest mountain terrain in Britain. From Nethy Bridge, it’s straightforward to reach classic high-level routes and plateau walks around the central Cairngorms. For newer walkers, Cairngorm itself provides the most straightforward route up, accessible from the Ski Centre carpark, providing beautiful views on clear days.

These are big landscapes, where weather and conditions can change quickly, especially outside the summer months. We’re always happy to share local knowledge on recent conditions and suggest lower-level alternatives if the hills aren’t an option.
